Making The Effort to Understand
In the age of PR releases, AI slop, and data as a substitute for everything, it’s a rare occurrence when you find people making an effort to try to really understand what is going on.
The transformation of life, work, the Middle Class, and local communities is happening in front of our eyes, and you can choose to look away, or you can try to learn.
The UK is in the grip of another transformation of leadership that made the result of the recent Makerfield by-election international news.
Manchester Mayor and wannabe Prime Minister- Andy Burnham was pushed into the fray to run in this election and won a seat in parliament.
Before the election, Guardian reporters John Harris and John Domokos went to a part of England (that Burnham knows well and has helped ground his thinking) to understand for themselves what’s happening.
I think their approach, knocking on doors, making friends in pubs, capturing stories, and going to see things for themselves, is both empathetic and refreshing. It makes the situation, the feelings, and the people real and tangible.
More than that, they are on the hunt for positivity and optimism- the story of support in the community center and people rallying to lend a hand to paint the interior of a pub, to the guy who runs the bike store and is also looking for part-time work, but happy to fix a local’s bike for free.
They make the story, give it a human texture, and show that, despite everything, people can take matters into their own hands and do the right thing.
This is sixteen minutes long, but it’s well worth watching.
Would love to hear what people think.
We need more of this.
More willingness to seek out real perspectives.
To search for hope and optimism wherever it can be found.
To put in the effort to do the work to better understand.

I love this Ed and yes we do need some positivity. I’ve written before about smaller independent businesses are continuing to grow in the UK but it needs more visibility. The Specialist Works for example and Craft media are continuing to hire and inspire young people through opportunities to work.
